Emergency Response Services

As residents and business owners who make up the board of the Greater Delhi Area Chamber of Commerce, we wanted to take this opportunity to express our appreciation for all the first responders in our area and let the community and visitors know the various ways you can support and contribute to the fire and EMS departments that do everything possible to ensure the safety of you, your home, and your business.

Who Are Our First Responders?

They are all volunteers. They are our neighbors, our co-workers, and our friends. These are individuals who are always on standby, ready to drop whatever they are doing to race to a call.

A recent study by the Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY) concluded that volunteers save the taxpayers of Delaware County around $68 million in property taxes as opposed to having paid firefighters.

How Are They Funded?

While fire and emergency services in Delaware County are volunteer-based, there is a definite need for funding to ensure they have everything required to respond to the needs of our area. That funding comes from a combination of local taxes, government grants, and fundraising efforts.

What You Can Do to Help

Volunteerism

  • Volunteering: Many fire departments, especially in areas like Delaware County, rely almost exclusively on volunteers. Individuals can volunteer their time to assist in various roles, such as firefighting, emergency medical services, administration, or fundraising.

  • Corporate Volunteering: Businesses can encourage their employees to volunteer for fire and EMS services by providing flexible hours, organizing team volunteer events, or offering paid time off for volunteering.

Donate

  • Monetary Donations: Individuals and businesses can contribute financial support to local fire and EMS departments. These donations help fund equipment purchases, training, facility maintenance, and operating expenses.

  • In-kind Donations: Local businesses may donate goods or services that help fire and EMS departments, such as office supplies, food and beverages for volunteers, or even equipment.

Fundraising

  • Corporate Sponsorships: Local businesses can become sponsors for fire and EMS-related events or specific projects, such as the purchase of new fire trucks or medical equipment.

  • Community Fundraisers: Our local fire and EMS services often hold or collaborate on fundraising events, such as dinners, raffles, auctions, car washes, and benefit events. Individuals and businesses can volunteer to help organize, sponsor, and support these events.

Equipment Donations

  • Direct Equipment Purchases: Individuals or businesses can make large contributions toward purchasing specific tools or apparatus, such as defibrillators, firefighting hoses, or personal protective equipment.

  • Used Equipment: Businesses that are upgrading their equipment might donate their older items to fire and EMS services, such as computers, medical supplies, or even vehicles.

These are just a few of the ways that individuals and businesses can support our local fire and EMS services. We as a Chamber of Commerce will look for ways to support and advocate for those who serve us anywhere we can.

Where can I learn more?

Success for the Business Community

Where’s Waldo in Delhi, NY, was a massive success for the village of Delhi. The scavenger hunt-style event hosted by The Lost Bookshop in partnership with Candlewick Press and the American Booksellers Association garnered over 250 participants. A cardboard cut out of the children’s book character, Waldo, was hidden in 25 local shops around Delhi. Participants went from shop to shop looking for Waldo and in exchange, received a stamp in their Where’s Waldo passport book. Those who spotted at least 20 Waldo’s were entered in a raffle to win prizes this past Wednesday, July 31st. Over 30 participants won prizes that were donated by local businesses. There was even a real life Waldo in the crowd!

This event was a huge success for the business community as each of the 250+ participants went into local shops, many for the first time, exposing them to the wonderful items and beautiful stores that make Delhi a great place to shop.

Congratulations to all of the participants and a huge thank you to The Lost Bookshop for their organizing efforts and to the 25 other businesses that hid Waldo and welcomed participants for the month of July!

2024 Bridge Run Scholarship Winners

The Annual Delhi Bridge Run took place on June 1st, 2024 with a great turn out and beautiful weather. The annual event brings the county together to enjoy time with the community and to raise funds to support graduating seniors and a charity or organization of their choice. Usually two graduating seniors receive scholarships but due to an overwhelming amount of great scholarship essays, a third recipient received a partial scholarship this year.

Allene Vesterfelt wrote an essay about how helping a neighbor-in-need exposed the fantastic work of Delaware Opportunities, an organization that has many facets. One of the services that stuck out to Allene is that Delaware Opportunities delivers meals to homebound adults and offers congregate dining for seniors who are able to travel and would like to enjoy a nutritious meal in good company. Read Allene’s full essay here

Kara Fitch wrote about Future Farmers of America and shared how the club not only teaches practical hands-on skills but supports the community with a variety of projects. Read more about Kara and Future Farmers of America in the scholarship winning essay here

Cooper Cohen wrote about the International Cultures Club at Delaware Academy. The club began as a way for students to learn more about various cultures around the world that don’t often show up in educational material. The club intends to bring awareness about the diversity of culture around the world and in Delaware County. Read Cooper’s essay here.

As recipients of the Bridge Run Scholarship, each student and the organization or club of their choice received a cash stipend to further support their missions. Thanks to all of the participants in the Bridge Run, the volunteers, and sponsors for making this year another great success!

It's Easy to Park in Delhi!

The heart of the Village of Delhi offers many wonderful, independently owned shops, restaurants, art spaces, and, of course, the weekly farmers' market. Parking spaces on Main Street can fill up quickly during market days, when there are events, and busy times during the week. Did you know there is additional parking, located centrally, that makes finding a parking spot easy? Hoyt Park offers not only a brief scenic riverwalk but also a spacious parking lot. Located behind Delhi Pizza Co., Speedway, and the Country Store, entry to the parking lot is on B. Scott Clark Drive between the Country Store and Fischer Auto Parts. Not everyone knows about this convenient parking lot (which also has four electric vehicle charging ports!) so be sure to keep it in mind and tell your friends!

Find Waldo Local

Each year, Waldo, from the iconic Where’s Waldo series, travels to towns across the United States for some hide-and-seek fun! Designed to encourage residents to patronize their local businesses, Candlewick Press and the American Booksellers Association are teaming up with 310 independent bookstores nationwide, including The Lost Bookshop in Delhi, NY, for a family-friendly scavenger hunt to find the iconic children’s book character. A cut-out will be hiding, with his red-and-white-striped shirt and black glasses, in twenty-five local businesses.

To participate in this special event taking place throughout July, people can simply pick up a “Find Waldo Local in Delhi!” stamp card at any of the participating stores. Searchers get their cards stamped or signed by the participating shop when they spot the miniature Waldo. Eagle-eyed hunters can also look for Waldo’s special 2024 gold medal hidden in The Lost Bookshop. Collecting store stamps or signatures at twenty or more businesses will entitle diligent seekers to enter into a grand prize drawing for Waldo books and other prizes. All participants are welcome to attend the celebration party at The Lost Bookshop on July 31st!

If you are interested in hiding Waldo in your local business and participating in this lively scavenger hunt, please email Emily Helck at thelostbookshoponline@gmail.com

If you are interested in participating in finding Waldo, stay tuned to find out which stores will host Waldo for the Find Waldo Local event beginning on July 1st.

The Outdoor Farmers’ Market is Back!

This Wednesday, May 1st, from 10am-2pm, marks the beginning of the outdoor Delhi Farmers’ Market. We want to take a moment to thank the vendors who kept us supplied with delicious food and local products all winter long. Now, even more vendors will join the market as it moves outdoors to Courthouse Square. The Delhi Farmers’ Market is a reliable way to source local groceries. There will be produce you can feel great about, local meat that has been pasture-raised with love, baked goods nearly warm from their morning bake, herbal remedies for all your ailments, and much more.

The Delhi Farmers’ Market is more than a place to shop. It is also a place to meet friends and enjoy lunch. It is a meeting ground to begin your adventure for the day while stocking up on items you enjoy. Not only is shopping at the farmers’ market beneficial to you, but it is also imperative to local farmers and producers in sustaining their business and all their hard work.

We are so excited for the start of the outdoor market as it creates a joyful buzz in the town of Delhi each Wednesday. So mark your calendars and rearrange your schedule to accommodate your weekly grocery shopping at the Delhi Farmers’ Market!

Spring Hiking in the Greater Delhi Area

Warmer weather is finally here, at least for this week, and it is prime time to get those legs moving by hiking in the greater Delhi Area. If you know where to look, there is no shortage of beautiful hiking locations within a quick drive of Delhi.

Photo of the SUNY Delhi Outdoor Education Center

The Gribley Trail is a 3 mile trail located on Sheldon Drive passing behind Delaware Academy. This trail makes a loop yet provides options to connect with Frightful Falls Trail and Bulldog Run Trail depending on the length and elevation you would like to hike. Together these three trails make up the Delhi Trails at Mt. Crawford

The Smith Pond Trail is an easy 1.1 mile hike with its trailhead on Route 28 opposite of Delaware Academy. It follows the West Branch of the Delaware River through grasslands and mixed forest.

For a trail intended to provide a full body workout, visit the Community Fitness Trail. This half mile trail has six fitness features and two picnic tables.

The SUNY Delhi Outdoor Education Center is a 40 acre park with trails that meander through old farm fields and dip down to the Delaware River. There is a labyrinth, a butterfly garden, fishing access, picnic tables and education markers sharing knowledge of native trees.

The Bramley Mountain Trail is a 4 mile loop that passes through an abandoned bluestone quarry, past small cliffs and caves, with expansive views at the top.

Spring is a unique time to hike as the undergrowth is still matted from the winter snow and the leaves have yet to arrive. This allows for wonderful views that wouldn’t otherwise be visible. Take advantage of this time of year and the gorgeous trails that the Catskill 3500 Club have worked so hard to establish. See you out there!
